Our Story

The Abingdon has been a cherished part of the Kensington neighbourhood since the Staples family acquired it in 1998. Ever since, it’s been proudly family-run—rooted in local tradition and shaped by the people who walk through our doors every day.

We pride ourselves on being an independent institution with a genuine community spirit. Our regulars are known by name, and new faces are always warmly welcomed. Today, the next generation of the Staples family keeps the spirit alive: Amicia is your host and sommelier, here to help you find the perfect glass or simply make you feel at home, while her sister Suki runs things behind the scenes, keeping everything running smoothly in the heart of the house.

Steeped in history, The Abingdon blends classic charm with a modern edge. Elegant booth seating and wooden floors pay homage to the building’s past, while art-deco touches and eclectic artwork give the space a contemporary, upmarket feel.

Our menu is unfussy but thoughtful—focused on flavour, quality, and local ingredients. And with a wine list featuring over 200 bottles from around the world, our wine bar is a true destination for enthusiasts and casual sippers alike.

Food

Grounded in British tradition, our food is thoughtful yet unfussy—crafted with care, seasonal ingredients, and an emphasis on rich, honest flavours. Each dish celebrates quality and simplicity, with just the right attention to detail.

In summer, a gentle Mediterranean influence graces the menu, reflecting the Staples family's deep connection to Cadaqués in Spain.

Some favourites have stood the test of time: our sticky toffee pudding has been a signature since day one, our famous steaks draw admirers far and wide, and our Sunday roasts have long brought families together to feast and celebrate.


Seafood Saturdays

Each Saturday, we bring the coast to your table with a brunch menu that celebrates the finest shellfish. Savour oysters served on ice, crevettes accompanied by a delicate Mary Rose sauce, a Scandinavian-inspired prawn skagen roll, and steaming bowls of moules frites. A true taste of the sea, prepared simply and beautifully for a leisurely weekend indulgence.


Wine Bar & Cocktails

Amicia carefully selects every bottle on our wine list, bringing together a thoughtfully curated collection of unique and exceptional wines from across the globe. With our Coravin system, we’re often able to offer by-the-glass pours of rare and top-tier vintages, allowing you to savour something truly special.

Our cocktail menu balances inventive creations—such as the delicate fig leaf martini—with timeless classics. The spicy margarita, a standout favourite, adds a touch of boldness to the mix.
